Car battery problems often occur at the most inconvenient times. This guide covers how to maintain your battery for maximum lifespan and how to replace it when necessary. Modern car batteries typically last 3-5 years depending on climate, driving habits, and vehicle electrical demands. Signs of a failing battery include slow engine cranking, dimming headlights, electrical issues, or the battery/charging warning light illuminating on your dashboard. To extend battery life, keep terminals clean by removing corrosion with a mixture of baking soda and water. Ensure the battery is securely mounted to prevent vibration damage and consider a trickle charger for vehicles that sit unused for extended periods. When replacement becomes necessary, the process is straightforward for most vehicles. First, disconnect the negative (black) terminal, then the positive (red) terminal. Remove any battery hold-down brackets or clamps, and lift the old battery out carefully - they can weigh 40-60 pounds. Install the new battery in the reverse order, connecting the positive terminal first, then the negative.
